Brush Up: Doggy Dental Health

 {February 1st, 2013 | Collar from Walmart}
Did you know – February is Pet Dental Health Month, and 80% of dogs develop some degree of periodontal disease by age 3, which in most cases results in a high vet bill for a root canal, dental cleaning and/or having teeth pulled? Do you have a dental routine with your dog?
I buy Jack\’s toothbrush (I change it every month) and toothpaste (Vanilla Mint – I tried Chicken flavor before, but it really made his breath stink) from his vet.

Routine: Each night before I go to bed I sit down on the kitchen floor and say “Jack, come brush your teeth”. He comes running into the room and jumps on my lap.

Jack recently had his yearly vet checkup and the vet said, “Wow, Jack has no tartar”. As a puppy parent this was music to my ears, and a few hundred dollars that remained in my pocket.

While I have my own dental care routine with Jack, if you don’t have one I highly recommend that you speak to your vet

Pralines

While visiting New Orleans a couple years ago I fell in love with the culture and the food especially the pralines. This weekend I tried to recreate one of my favorite Nola pralines, while it’s not the same I am pleased with the result and thought I would share it with you.
Pralines

Ingredients
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
¼ cup heavy cream
½ cup sugar
1 cup + 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1 cup pecan pieces.

Directions
1. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.
2. In medium saucepan over low heat, melt butter.
3. Add heavy cream and both sugars.
4. Continue cooking until sugars dissolve.
5. Increase heat to medium and simmer until reaches 240 degrees, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. If mixture begins to crystallize add 2 more tablespoons of the cream.
6. Add the pecans and remove from heat.
7. Spoon praline mixture onto prepared baking sheets.
8. Allow to cool at least 30 minutes before transferring to an airtight container.

Inner Picasso

This spring, fashion and art come together with gorgeous brushstrokes that allow you to release your inner Picasso with watercolor print dresses in breezy fabrics. My favorite is the Bowden dress from Kate Spade that features vibrant watercolor floral prints that were inspired by trips to Paris and afternoons spent strolling through gardens. I recently had the privilege of working with Adaline a aspiring fashion illustrator who did a fabulous job recreating my favorite watercolor print dress. Check out Adaline\’s Instagram or Blog for more fashion inspired illustrations.

Dog Toys Benefiting Autism Research

{Bow-Tie collar gifted from my mum}

A dog can never have too many toys especially when they’re toys that can Make-A-Difference. Furry & Fabulous released a line of dog toys that teens with Autism designed and let me tell you they’re not only adorable, but some of Jack’s favorite toys.

The Autism Collection was created by the participants of Pride Paws, which provides job training to young adults with developmental disabilities. 10% of the sales from each toy in the collection will be donated to prideventuresinc.org for the continued success of Pride Paws and autismspeaks.org for research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism.
