Highlights of 2017

Just like that it’s February, and I just realized that I never talked about 2017 – ooops! So let’s get to talking, for me personally 2017 ended on a terrible note, which is why I keep saying over and over what an awful year 2017 was. In reality it had its fair share of bumps but was actually a good year as a whole. Instead of dwelling on the negatives – for instance my bff and I drifting apart and losing my grandma (who I am insanely close to) on Christmas day, I want to highlight some of my favorite moments. These positive moments made for a fabulous year, and I cherish the memories that were created throughout 2017. Without further ado here are my top 15 moments of 2017:

• Went to Chicago with Cookie and her family – got the hookup with some amazing views and a super fun night out

• Bought a bike – and put on some serious mileage

• Visited Ludington multiple times, and explored with Cookie

• Met a bunch of TIU girls in the woods

• Walked 60 miles in 3 days in support of Susan G Komen 3 Day, and met two amazing ladies that became my “ 3-Day Besties”

• Went boating on Lake St Clair for the first time

• Headed to Chicago for the TIU tour with my TIU bestie

• Tried some amazing restaurants, and new (to me) foods

• Went for a ride on the Detroit Princess

• Visited Lake Huron for the first time

• Took my first trip to the “thumb-area”

• Helped put up Christmas lights that I redid three times

• Checked out Greenfield Village Holiday Nights for the first time

• Rode in a fire truck (thank you!)

• Met a great guy, who has flipped my world upside down

Here’s to a great New Year with plenty of new memories and opportunities

Harsens Island Schoolhouse Grille

Of course, our Harsens Island adventure ended with a trip to the Schoolhouse Grille. This restaurant actually used to be a schoolhouse from 1934 to 2005, and in 2009 it was renovated into a restaurant, offering a unique and fun experience with amazing food. The meal started with rolls that paired nicely with their delicious garlic butter. He got a bowl of carrot soup; neither of us had ever tried carrot soup before and we were actually impressed by the taste. For our main course we split Baja Chicken Tacos (on special for the day), and an order of sweet potato fries. The tacos were filled with blackened chicken, lime cabbage, fresh papaya, pineapple, avocado and spicy mayo – so good! We concluded the meal with Tropical Pie – it had a key lime base, and since a certain someone (him not me haha) is a huuuuuge key lime fan we couldn’t pass up the pie.

Harsens Island – Winter Edition

There’s no better way to spend a Saturday then hopping on the car ferry and heading across the lake to Harsens Island. This trip presented two firsts for me. One I have never been on a car ferry and two I have never been to Harsens Island. Harsens Island is a wet marshy location at the mouth of the St. Clair River on Lake St. Clair, which offers some gorgeous views in a quaint setting. We started our adventure by driving around the island and checking out the houses, and beautiful views of the lake. Since it is winter there is less for you to do, however we’re giving you a list of five things to do on Harsens Island this winter:

1. Visit the Schoolhouse Grille for a delicious meal.
2. Walk on the ice and see a gorgeous view of the lighthouses (use caution and make sure ice is thick enough).
3. Grab a shanty and go ice fishing.
4. Watch the sunset (winter sunsets in Michigan are amazing especially on the water).
5. Fat bike around the island.

TGIF! What a week it’s been! Last Friday started with the boy actually having a legit house fire call (that doesn’t happen often in the small city he is a volunteer firefighter in) – thankfully everyone including the firefighters were all safe. The weekend presented a lot of fun and the week presented a different tone when I had to take Jackers to an emergency vet appointment – he has a soft tissue back injury (thank goodness it was nothing major), and we are on two weeks of this wild one not being able to do any activities. On a happy note….February is almost here which means Valentine’s Day (my faaaavvvv)!! Here’s some pictures from the past week:

Sock It To Me

I am darn tough on my feet, and that’s why when it comes to hiking, biking, running, skiing and any other outside activity I want a good pair of socks. I recently discovered Darn Tough Socks, and let me tell you immediately (before trying them on) I fell in love with them. You guys they’re made in the USA – specifically Vermont. I am a HUGE advocate of buying products made in the USA, and was beyond excited to find a brand of socks that not only keeps my feet comfortable while adventuring, but also is made right here in the United States.
Each sock is knitted with a small needle on fine gauge knitting machines. This approach produces a durable, high density stitching without the bulk – therefore you get a better fit. Having a better fitting sock, means it will last longer. Oh, and it gets better – these socks come with a warranty! Yes, you read that correctly. If you wear a hole in them they will replace them FREE of charge, for LIFE. I have worn the socks while hiking, skiing and just hanging out around the house – hands down these socks are amazing and I can’t believe it took me so long to discover such an amazing brand.
