Growing up in a state with all four seasons I watched my mum buy fresh cut flowers from a local store during the colder months. Grow a gorgeous flower garden in the spring and summer, and have a couple house plants all year long to keep our home cheery. My mum has taught me some wonderful tips and tricks for keeping house plants alive even if you do not have a green thumb. 1. Choose plants that will work with the light in your home. 2. Give your plant a name and actually talk to it. 3. Do not over water – when you stick your finger into the soil it should be almost dry before you water the plant again.
1. Amaryllis are low maintenance, love direct sunlight and use a drench and dry method when it comes to watering.
2. Peacock Plants are grown for their decorative foliage. Need direct light/filtered light and like a humid home.
3. Just Add Ice Orchids are perfect for any home. These flowers like indirect sunlight and only need three ice cubes per week.
4. Ponytail Palms are virtually indestructible, like a sunny spot and only need to be watered once a week.
5. Succulents are low maintenance if in a sunny spot, water once a week and enjoy.
Do you have any house plants? If so what do you have?
Over presidents day weekend my mum and I were at the mall shopping. As we walked past Yankee Candle we noticed a huge sign that said $5 tea light candles. Both of us stocked up on the candles and I even decided to buy three extra boxes of my favorite scents to use as friendship gifts. I took one of each scent; Cherry Lemonade, Vanilla Lime and Meyer Lemon and placed them in a cello bag and tied it with a ribbon. Each gift wrapped comes to $1.50. An inexpensive gift that your guest will love!
Cho is warm vanilla beige. It is a perfect nude nail polish hue.
Farah is a cool tone putty beige. Against my olive skin tone it really pulled out more green in the polish.
Bevin is a pale seafoam sage green, and makes the perfect spring time color. I am usually one who does not like green polishes, but I love this one.
Skylar is a purplely blue with shimmer and reminds me of a spring nighttime sky after the sunset.
Tru is an eggplant purple with plenty of shimmer and glitter.
Lotus is a dusty medium purple with pink and red shimmer
What do you think of Zoya\’s Spring 2012 collection?
A lingering scent can be that essential finishing touch to a simple home change or a gorgeous interior design project. My dad\’s friend Penny is an interior designer, and she informed me that whenever she completes an interior design project for a client she always lights a few of her signature scented candles before she leaves (if they are home of course). She also informed me that creating a mood is not just about the colors on your wall, but attention to small details such as candles. A signature scent is a candle that is not used seasonally in your home, but year round. – so how do you get that scent?
Considering this when choosing a home scent. The scent should compliment your décor. A fresh pine scent does not make sense in a beach house, however a Frasier Fur scent does make sense in an up north cabin. A modern space is clean so accentuate with clean fragrance. If your house has earth tones go for a more earthy scent such as vanilla or a fruit and spice mixture.
Universally pleasing smell. Fresh citrus and fruity candles are a great option that everyone can enjoy.
Other options to candles. Buy reed diffusers! Reeds will scent up to a three foot radius which means you can have a different fragrance in each room of your home.
One last thing I just discovered Linnea\’s Lights Hand Poured Natural Soy Candles. The candles burn so clean, and they come in very unique scents. One of these candles would definitely make a great signature scent if you are in need of one.
So tell me what is your signature scent?
