Traditional Pittsburgh Baklava

I spent a few years in Pittsburgh, and while living there I learned some of their traditions. One of them being you can\’t have a Christmas cookie display without Baklava. Of course, I had to learn how to make this delicious Baklava so I could carry on the tradition no matter where I was living. I figured now would be the perfect opportunity for me to share this amazing recipe with you. What cookie traditions do you have?

Baklava
Ingredients
1 pound phyllo sheets
3/4 cup melted butter
2 cups finely chipped walnuts
1/ 2 cup sugar
1 /2 tsp. cinnamon
3/ 4 cup sugar
3/ 4 cup honey
1 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions
1. If phyllo is frozen thaw and separate according to package. Keep pastry that is not being used covered with a clean damp dishtowel (this prevents it from drying out). Place half of the pastry sheets in a greased 15×10 glass baking dish; one by one, brushing each sheet quickly all over with melted butter.
2. Combine nuts, 1 /2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over buttered pastry. Place remaining sheets on top.
3. Score the baklava in the shape you desire (triangle or diamond). Bake at 400 degrees until brown and crisp. 20-30 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine remaining 3/ 4 cup sugar, honey, 1 cup water and lemon juice, bring to a boil. Boil syrup for about 20 minutes, stirring constantly until it becomes thick syrup. Cool for 15 minutes and pour over baklava.

2019 Metro Detroit Christmas To-Do List

The holiday season is a little tougher on me this year, you see last year Meeme (my grandma I was ridiculously close to) unexpectedly passed away on Christmas day. Recently, when I have walked into certain stores I have randomly started to cry – as things remind me of her. I am doing my best to make the most of the season, and have made a list of things that I would like to do around the Metro Detroit area. This year I am keeping it small and simple, as I don\’t want to get completely overwhelmed. What\’s on your Christmas to-do list.

Gift Guide: Stocking Stuffers for Her

Growing up, my brother and I’s stockings were always overflowing, and of course I have kept that tradition going. To be honest, stocking stuffers are my favorite, you never know what you’ll get which makes them a lot of fun to put together. I love throwing in essentials like warm fuzzy socks and underwear and a couple splurge-worthy items like makeup brushes. I’m big on the little things meaning the most, and stockings really let the little things shine.

Thanksgiving

This year has been a tough one for me. I’ve struggled with personal loss, professional setbacks and more times than I want to admit ran away from people and moments when things got hard. I have realized that I need to be more present in moments, and have the memories in my mind instead of “the perfect picture”. I have so much to be grateful for this year, and have been reminded to take nothing for granted. I hope you all have wonderful Thanksgiving, and I am so grateful for every last one of you reading this.
