Easter is coming up, and for those of you who celebrate and are also trying to watch your weight, this means another holiday of dealing with candy and sweets. The positive side is that there is no rule that says you have to fill your Easter basket with pounds of chocolate eggs and jellybeans. Fill your basket with these healthier alternatives instead:
• Fresh fruit
• Homemade cookies or muffins made with healthy ingredients like oats, raisins, dried cranberries, walnuts, and dark chocolate chips
• Dark chocolate covered cranberries, raisins, or peanuts
• Trail mix
• Fitness DVDs
• Fruit jams with a fancy jam spreader
• Granola bars
• Makeup
• Nail Polish
• A potted plant
• Small picture frames
• Health and fitness magazines
• Herbal teas and a mug
• A CD of relaxing music
For the Kids
• coloring books
• colored pencils
• puzzles
• small toys
• stuffed bunnies
• stickers
• magnets
• disposable camera
• packet of seeds and gardening tools
• plastic eggs filled with coins or beads
• Silly Putty
• pastel- colored socks
• jewelry
• toy cars

My mom wasn't big on us having too many sweets so we always got a chocolate bunny, a few other candies and then toys. As we got older, we started getting things like cd's, films, magazines, nail polishes, earrings, socks, sunglasses, etc in our baskets and I always loved that! Candy doesn't last long anyway!Would love to do a baskets tradition with hubs, but here in the UK, the standard is that everyone gets a giant chocolate egg… That is the last thing I want when I'm trying to slim down, so I'll ask for a wee present instead! 🙂

GREAT tips…my kids are both older now, but I did away with the candy years ago and started adding gift certificates and the ideas you mention here…NO ONE needs an entire basket of candy on Easter or any other day of the year, lol.

I always loved getting nailpolish and bonne belle chap stick in my easter basket as a kid. Easter candy really is my favorite though. Those huge caramel cadberry eggs are one of the best things on earth.

I did a variety of healthy Easter Baskets for my kids when they were growing up. I usually went with a theme, one year was all office type supplies because they liked to play like they had an office, another year it was all garden supplies complete with potting plants like lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries. They loved it! They also got a few candies but that wasn't the focus.

I dread Easter :-(… my mother in law gets us two HUGE baskets of all kinds of unhealthy candy crap… It's sad, I still have my FULL basket from last year and need to dump everything out. My husband is a huge sugar/candy eater and it worries me how much he consumes over Easter. I really like the idea of alternate baskets, filled with healthier things. I am going to make him one full of trail mix and dried fruits, way better then chocolates!

My parents rarely give my brother and I candy in our Easter baskets. We always get one box of our favorite Girl Scout cookies, but other than that, everything else is non-edible! I love getting OPI nail polish, some fun jewelry, dvds, and other little things!

great post! i'm not much of a candy person, so sadly the candy in my basket usually gets wasted (well not wasted…it gets eaten eventually, but it takes a while). i would much rather get clothing or things like nailpolish, stationery, etc in my easter basket over candy! and those muffins? YES PLEASE!
