Broadway in Detroit is pleased to announce that tickets for Heidi Schreck’s Tony Award nominated play and Pulitzer Prize finalist What the Constitution Means to Me will go on sale Friday, October 29, 2021. What the Constitution Means to Me will play Detroit’s Fisher Theatre for a limited three-week engagement December 14, 2021, through January 2, 2022. Tickets start at $25 and are available for purchase online at Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-982-2787, and in person at the Fisher Theatre Box Office.
Cassie Beck will star in the Detroit engagement on the National Tour of What the Constitution Means to Me, directed by Oliver Butler. Beck (“I Know What You Did Last Summer,” The Humans on Broadway), will be joined for this engagement by Mike Iveson, and high school students Jocelyn Shek and Emilyn Toffler in the role of the debater.
Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will affect the next generation of Americans. Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human new play, she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.
Schreck’s timely and galvanizing play, directed by Oliver Butler, became a sensation on Broadway where it received two Tony Award® nominations among countless other accolades. See the play The New York Times hailed as “not just the best play on Broadway, but also the most important.”
Initially announced for a 12-week engagement on Broadway, What the Constitution Means to Me was extended twice and fully recouped in its Broadway engagement, shattering box office records at the Helen Hayes Theater (240 W 44th Street, New York, NY), for a total run of 24 weeks. What the Constitution Means to Me officially opened March 31, 2019, after beginning preview performances March 14, and played its final Broadway performance on August 24, 2019.
Following Broadway, What the Constitution Means to Me played a record-breaking limited engagement run at the Eisenhower Theater at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., as well as two sit down engagements in Los Angeles and Chicago before halting performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The success of the Broadway production also spurred a filmed capture of the show, which is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
What the Constitution Means to Me features scenic design by Rachel Hauck (Hadestown), costume design by Michael Krass (Hadestown), lighting design by Jen Schriever (Eclipsed), and sound design by Sinan Refik Zafar (Hamlet).
What the Constitution Means to Me was commissioned by True Love Productions. This production originated as part of Summerworks 2017, produced by Clubbed Thumb in partnership with True Love Productions. The national tour of What the Constitution Means to Me is produced by Diana DiMenna, Aaron Glick, Matt Ross, and Level Forward & Eva Price.

Disney Theatrical Productions and Broadway In Detroit announced today that tickets for the long-awaited return engagement of Disney’s The Lion King will go on sale to the public on Friday, October 22, 2021. Detroit’s most eagerly awaited return will once again leap onto the Detroit Opera House stage on January 27, 2022 for a limited engagement through Sunday, February 20, 2022. The show’s four-week engagement in 2017 played a sold-out run at the Detroit Opera House.
In Detroit, The Lion King will play Tuesdays through Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Premium Ticket Packages, which include a prime seat location, a souvenir program and an exclusive cinch bag, are also available. Beginning Friday, October 22, 2021 tickets will be available at the Fisher Theatre Box Office, online at Ticketmaster.com and BroadwayInDetroit.com. Ticket prices start at $25. Orders for groups of 10 or more may be placed by emailing broadwayindetroitgroups@theambassadors.com or calling 313-871-1132. A special Open Captioned performance will be Sunday, January 30 at 6:30 p.m. Performance schedule, prices and cast are subject to change without notice.
Broadway In Detroit uses Ticketmaster as its sole, authorized ticketing agent. Individual tickets purchased from a ticket broker or “third party” ticket reseller involves risk and may not be authentic, sold at box office prices, or with correct performance and venue information. Broadway In Detroit box offices cannot verify tickets sold through a third party or ticket reseller. Broadway In Detroit is also unable to contact third party purchasers with pertinent updates or changes regarding performances.
Following the lead of Broadway and concert venues across the country, Broadway In Detroit theatre patrons will be required to show proof of a negative Covid test within 72 hours of the performance date or proof of full Covid-19 vaccination before they will be admitted into the venue. Additionally, all patrons will be required to wear a mask while inside the theatre regardless of one’s vaccination status.
Disney on Broadway performances are recommended for a general audience. As an advisory to adults who might bring young people, Disney recommends its productions for ages 6 and up. Children under the age of 2 will not be admitted to The Lion King tour performances. Children ages 2-11 will not need to show proof of negative Covid test or vaccine to attend The Lion King at the Detroit Opera House. All persons entering the theater, regardless of age, must have a ticket and will be required to wear a mask at all times except when actively eating or drinking.
All ticket purchasers will receive a Broadway In Detroit Health & Safety Guide via email in the weeks prior to their performance. This guide will also be posted on the company’s website (BroadwayInDetroit.com) and available at the Fisher Theatre box office. It will have the latest information on the company’s health and safety protocols as well as information on what to expect when you arrive at the theatre.

The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s songs from The Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of The Lion King is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award®-winning song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to Lebo M’s rich choral numbers.
Elton John, Lebo M, and Hans Zimmer all collaborated on the 2019 version of the film, executive produced by Julie Taymor and Thomas Schumacher, which has gone onto extraordinary worldwide success.
The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated The Lion King feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay. Other members of the creative team include: Michael Curry, who designed the masks and puppets with Taymor, Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design), Michael Ward (hair and makeup design), Anthony Lyn (associate director), Marey Griffith (associate choreographer), Clement Ishmael (music supervisor), Doc Zorthian (production supervisor) and Binder Casting/Mark Brandon, CSA (casting). I have been a fan of Clifford the Big Red Dog since I was a little girl. My mom was recently going through nostagic books she had in a box to start reading to my nephew and she came across my Clifford books that were read so many times they are starting to fall apart. I am so excited to announce (and I hope you share in my excitement), Paramount is bringing one of my favorite childhood characters to life in Clifford the Big Red Dog movie—heading to theaters and Paramount Plus on November 10th.
