A Journal for Jordan in Theaters Christmas Day

Ever since my grandma passed away on Christmas Day, Christmas traditions have changed. I now myself spending the day solo with my pup curled up on the couch indulging in sweet treats and movies on the Hallmark Channel. This year could be different, A Journal for Jordan arrives in theaters December 25th and here’s to hoping its as good as the book.

A Journal for Jordan Synopsis

Directed by Denzel Washington and starring Michael B. Jordan with a screenplay by Virgil Williams, A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN is based on the true story of First Sergeant Charles Monroe King (Jordan), a soldier deployed to Iraq who begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son. Back at home, senior New York Times editor Dana Canedy (Chanté Adams) revisits the story of her unlikely, life-altering relationship with King and his enduring devotion to her and their child. A sweeping account of a once-in-a-lifetime love, the film is a powerful reminder of the importance of family. PG-13.

Detroit get excited! Broadway in Detroit just added three more shows to their 2022 lineup. Stomp, Waitress and Freestyle Love Supreme will be headed to the Music Hall in downtown Detroit, and packages start at $99 for all three shows! I have seen Waitress and Stomp previously and both were amazing shows. Waitress is actually on my top 10 list of favorite shows.

Waitress | March 15-20, 2022
Freestyle Love Supreme | May 31 – June 5

Broadway In Detroit announced today it will offer a special series at Music Hall featuring award-winning, familiar favorites STOMPand WAITRESS along with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s critically acclaimed hip-hop improv show FREESTYLE LOVE SUPREME.

STOMP, the international percussion sensation, will perform at Detroit’s Music Hall, March 1-6, 2022. From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation performing for more than 27 years, having performed in more than 50 countries and in front of more than 24 million people. Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, STOMP continues its phenomenal run with four global productions. Throughout its life, the show has continued to change by creating new material; next year it will incorporate two new pieces. It is safe to say you will never again look at supermarket carts or plumbing fixtures the same way… or paint cans, or kitchen sinks or…

WAITRESS will play The Music Hall, March 15-20, 2022. Meet Jenna, a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. Pouring her heart into her pies, she crafts desserts that mirror her topsy-turvy life such as “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie” and “Betrayed By My Eggs Pie.” When a baking contest in a nearby county — and a satisfying encounter with someone new — show Jenna a chance at a fresh start, she must find the courage to seize it. Change is on the menu, as long as Jenna can write her own perfectly personal recipe for happiness.

2021 Holiday Bucket List

Snow’s falling, twinkle lights are going up and it’s finally acceptable to listen to Christmas music in public—the holiday season has arrived! In between rocking around the Christmas tree and decking the halls make sure you make time for checking these must-dos off your holiday bucket list this year—maybe one will even turn into a new holiday tradition. Light your favorite holiday candle ( I am burning Kalamazoo Candle Company Hearth & Home), queue up a holiday playlist, and read on to make this the best holiday season ever.

Make a batch of homemade hot chocolate

Of course, you can heat up some milk and toss in Hersey syrup, but what’s the fun in that? From hot cocoa bombs and Mexican hot chocolate to healthier dairy free hot cocoa you’re sure to find a unique way to indulge in hot chocolate this holiday season.

Healthy Dairy Free Hot Cocoa

Ingredients:
1 cup oat or almond milk
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions:
1. Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan.
2. Heat over medium high heat.
3. Use a whisk to break up any clumps.
4. Stir until smooth and piping hot.
5. Pour into a mug and enjoy.
Pro Tip: I like topping my hot chocolate with dairy-free whipped cream and pieces of candy canes.

Go on a drive to look at lights

There’s no prettier sight than the Christmas lights around your hometown.

Watch Christmas movies

From classics like Christmas Vacation, A Wonderful Life, The Grinch, and A Christmas Story to Hallmark Christmas movies there’s no better time of year to mix old favorites with new favorites.

Send some holiday cards

Christmas cards have always been my favorite to give and receive. It’s just a great way to show friends and family you care and are thinking about them during the holidays.

Buy tickets for a holiday show or experience

Because is it really Christmas without seeing a performance of The Nutcracker? I say not. Get dressed up in your most festive fancy wear (sequin dress, anyone?), and get totally wrapped up in the Christmas spirit.

Rock a tacky Christmas sweater party

From holiday parties to holiday shows adding an ugly Christmas sweater is always a fun idea. My friend and I will be rocking our ugly Christmas sweaters at an upcoming holiday show that we’ll be attending in downtown Detroit.

Go ice skating

Who doesn’t love ice skating around a gorgeous Christmas tree?

Build a gingerbread house

Nothing like revisiting childhood nostalgia and building/decorating a gingerbread house.

Review: Hadestown

On Tuesday I went to hell and back when I entered the Fisher Theatre in Detroit, Michigan to see Hadestown. I went into the show not knowing what it was about or what to expect, and let me tell you—I was BLOWN away. If you are going to see one Broadway musical this year it should definitely be Hadestown.

Ask yourself are you up for a journey to hell? Now through December 5th, 2021 you can board the train to the underworld at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit where Hadestown is making its debut in Detroit.

Based on Greek mythology, Hadestown is an adaptation of the love story between Orpheus and Eurydice. Hadestown tells the story of Eurydice who feels abandoned by Orpheus and goes to the underworld with Hades when Orpheus misses her calling for him. Once Orpheus learns what has happens he decided to make the dangerous and seemingly impossibly journey to the underworld to save his love.

The Fates jump in and out of the story as they make the main characters think about their choices. I absolutely loved the song “When the Chips Are Down”, and I wasn’t alone the song came with two full rounds of applause. Another song that came with two full rounds of applause and a few standing ovations was “Wait For Me”. The scores are unlike any other show you will see and the audiences reaction to it is definitely unique from other performances i’ve seen.

Hadestown is unique from other Broadway musicals in that the orchestra (minus drums) is actually on stage and becomes part of the show. The show is a brilliant masterpiece and I truly cannot recommend it enough.

Hadestown is in Detroit through December 5, 2021.
