Five Things: Birthday Edition

A few months ago I was in a bakery and saw the cutest unicorn cake. I took a couple pictures and showed my mum to see if she could make it for my birthday. She said of course that it would be easy to make – she is super talented and my brother and I are extremely lucky to always get super cute cakes. Unintentionally since I wanted a unicorn cake it became the whole theme of my birthday. Here\’s a peek at some of the goodies….

Restaurant Review: River Crab

My birthday was Sunday, and Andrew surprised me with dinner at River Crab. Little back-story apparently this was the place he wanted to take me on our first “real” date, but they had a private event that night so he had to get creative and come up with a different place. I guess my birthday presented him with the perfect opportunity to bring me there. First let me start by saying if you love the water and seafood, this is definitely the place for you. The view was absolutely stunning, and we even watched a freighter go by. So let’s get to the good stuff… the food….

We started the evening with Firecracker Shrimp which was tempura battered with a creamy sweet chili glaze on top. Absolutely AMAZING, and I usually do not like shrimp. Having fresh with a kick really makes a difference.

A ordered the Applejack Sea Bass with sweet bourbon reduction, apples, sun-dried cherries and wild rice risotto. This was his first experience with sea bass, and he was really impressed by the taste and flavor.
I ordered the Planked Salmon with tarragon mustard glaze, roasted vegetables and roasted redskins. Hands down the BEST salmon I have ever had.

If you know A and I you know we hardly ever pass up dessert. When you celebrate your birthday at River Crab they hook you up with their homemade Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée, which consist of smooth and creamy custard with real vanilla bean and a caramelized sugar crust. A asked the waiter if he could find a candle so I could make a birthday wish and he came back with a pink one – even the waiter knew my favorite color – ha. This Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée was the BEST crème brûlée that I have EVER had, and I have had it made right in front of me by a fancy pants French pastry chef in New Orleans before. If you go to the River Crab I highly recommend ordering it for dessert, you will not regret it and you can thank me later.

Key Lime Pie was on the menu, so if you have been reading Fashion meets Food the past few months you may have figured out that A loves key lime pie. The Key Lime Pie is made with their signature house recipe, fresh key lime juice and a graham cracker crust.

2018 Hyundai Elantra Limited

*I received the Hyundai Elantra Limited  for seven days to test drive, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

It has been an AWFUL winter here in Michigan. Freezing temperatures, ridiculous amounts of snow, and hardly any sunny days. So what do you do when you\’re test driving the 2018 Hyundai Elantra Limited and have a sunny day? You crank the heat, turn on the heated seats and open the sunroof – seriously I need a sunroof in my life. This bad boy gets about 32 MPG combined city and highway, 28 MPG city and 37 MPG highway. I loved how far I could go on a tank of gas.

Blind Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert: I really liked knowing when a car was in my blind spot.Rearview Camera with Dynamic Backup Lines: Very clear camera and really nice for helping you parallel park (I actually taught myself how to finally parallel park with this camera) backup and more. What is even better is it lets you know when a car is behind you to ensure you do not hit it.Lane Keep Assist System: This feature lets you know when it thinks you are unintentionally going over a line in the road, and begin to move you back. I ended up having to turn this off because it constantly told me that I was out of my life when I was in it. Also I was constantly out of my lane dodging pot holes haha.Heated seats: Warmed up really quickly which I loved.Sunroof: Definitely loved this feature, and used it even when temperatures were very low.
Backseat: Rear cup holders.
7 Inch Display Audio System: Loved how large the screen was.Infinity Premium Audio System with Eight Speakers + Center Channel and Subwoofer: Music gets bumpin\’.Leather Seats: Super attractive and comfortable.

Ugh Debt, I\’ve Been There Too

I have two strong fears – debt and swimming. Yes I realize they’re both very different fears, however they both hit me really hard. With the help of A I am hoping to concur my fear of swimming. As for debt I actively work hard to make sure that I don’t have any. Do any of you have a fear of debt? If so the Nationwide Debt Reduction Services may be able to help you. When it came to college I didn’t get any scholarships or handouts. I acquired plenty of debt while I was in college. I worked for the school newspaper for spare money for eating out and adventures, but really wanted to just enjoy college without the worry of having a job. I went to classes, adventured, met amazing people and of course stayed out way too late most nights. When I graduated and had to start paying off my debt I about stroked out. $675 a month, how in the heck was I ever going to afford that? I ended up sweet talking them to dropping my payment to $375 a month, which was more manageable for myself – but in my mind I thought I would be 700 years old before I was able to pay my debt. I looked into debt reduction plans, and soon started regretting the amount of money that was spent at school. However without those incredible years I wouldn’t of found myself, met amazing people and had my life completely changed. So at that moment I decided that I was going to make it my goal to have ALL of my college debt paid off by the time I was 30. I picked up extra jobs, put every single penny I was given for birthday and Christmas gifts towards my debt, and cooked a lot of meals at home  and even made my own 100 calorie snack bags at home  Eight months before I turned 30 – I did it. I officially paid off ALL of my debt, and for the first time since I turned 18 I was 100 percent debt free and it was AMAZING. I know everyone isn’t as lucky to get things paid off, but there are Nationwide Debt Reduction Servicesthat can help you get out of the debt you’ve acquired. Debt is scary, and trust me – i\’ve been there too so never feel like your alone or that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
